San Ysidro Trail Race

April 27, 2012

This week we continue with The Year of Random Races That Are Not on Bikepaths.

Last year when they ran this race, Lance Armstrong showed up to test his trail legs.  Since there was no guarantee that he would show again this year, I told Nancy that I would show up so that there would be at least one celebrity there (I do write a self-published blog, you know).

San Ysidro, Old Pueblo, Buena Vista, Mc Menemy, Hot Springs Fire Road, Cold Springs Fire Road.  Those were all of the trails on this butterfly-from-hell shaped course

I included the elevation profile so you would think of how much of a bad-ass I was for running this course.  There are no cameras on the trails that reveal that some runners had to walk up a lot of the hills because Saturday’s workout had kicked his butt

The dude running next to me…I have no idea who he is.  But when I saw the camera I had to let the people know how much fun this race was.  Then it was monkey see, monkey do.

I told him, “Dude, keep your arms up for the next picture”!  Then at the last second, I switched to an even cooler move.  He did not stand a chance.  Arms raised in the air?  Pfffft….so 10 steps ago…

In the what-went-right department, at least the fog hung around so the weather was good for running.  Also the trails are in really nice shape and some of the views would have been amazing if it had not been for the aforementioned fog.  Going up killed my calves, coming down killed my quads.  In the end, I found myself running with Kent and Nash.  Nash would go by us on the uphills talking trash and then Kent and I would run by him on the downhills.  It was like a big game of chutes and ladders on the switchbacks except that if you took the chutes to try a shortcut you ran the risk of running off the side of the mountain.  In the final sprint to the finish, Kent ran by us to finish in 9th place overall.  Nash took 10th and I followed in 11th

Thanks to Nancy for putting this race together.  They have one more trail run in the series at the end of May so maybe I’ll do that one too if they still need celebrities.

So I’m running with an unnamed runner who had just raced the 10 miler and he is telling me about his race.  Ok, it was Eric.  So anyways, he tells me that at the beginning of the race a woman in front of him fell and he had to leap over her and he had to put his hand on the ground to catch himself.  Unfortunately when he put his hand down it went directly into a pile of shit.  The smell was so bad that he had to stop in the bathrooms to wash his hands but he rallied and was still able to come in 9th overall.  I said, “Boy, you must have been pooped”.

I know what you are thinking, “Oh great…another video.  Does he do anything besides watch videos online”?  Well look, most of the videos I watch could never be published in a family blog but this one happens to be intelligent.  Have you ever watched one of the TED videos and not thought, “Well that was interesting”?  This one is with the author of Born to Run.  You may not agree with all of his philosophies but he is a good speaker

Lastly, this one you can skip unless you really like running.  It’s for my dad.  He lives in NJ and does not get to watch Col run so this is for him to see.  Hi Dad.  The first race is the 800 where he hangs on the dudes shoulder for the whole race but he can’t take him at the end.  They run about 2:10.  The second race is the 4×400 where he runs 3rd and has an awesome race.  55 seconds.  If you look closely you can see Rusty & June cheering him on in the bleachers in the far straightaway.

Oh, sorry about the shake.  It was windy out there.  And I’m old.

Fun With Children

April 20, 2012

Being a parent keeps getting easier in many ways but there is always a new challenge that they forgot to add to the instruction book.  Sage had been away for the last week at that rite-of-6th-grade-passage, Astro Camp.  When she came home on Friday evening, she was exhausted.  Saturday turned out to be a busy day for her as well and we ended up staying out kind of late too.  Which brings us to the start of our story.

Sunday was to be her first official track meet as a member of Club West.  Sage stayed in bed late which is a big clue that she does not want to do something.  When we urged her to get moving, she began to cry the tears of the tired and frustrated.  She protested that the coaches were mean and that she did not want to come in last place.

We had not heard any of these complaints before so we chalked them up to fatigue.  Sage is a solid athlete but the Speed Fairy has not visited her just yet.  I suspect once she lengthens she may start to move faster like her brother but maybe not.  People have all kinds of different strengths.  I could not have tried out for the part of the Wicked Witch and memorized hundreds of words in three weeks like she did last summer.  She also comes from the world of team sports, soccer and basketball.  In those sports, you win and lose as a team in a shared spotlight.  In a track meet, the spotlight shines on a team of one.

But the people at Club West have devised a devious system where they collect a healthy deposit up front and then if you do not volunteer at two different track meets, you do not get your deposit back.  As such, Shan was volunteering at this meet and if we had to go, so was the girl.

The meet officials immediately recognized the Talent that they had volunteering for them and handed the lady a walkie talkie and put her in charge of the long jump.  After fifteen minutes, I explained to her that you have to press the button in order for the other person to hear you talk.  Things went much smoother after that.

In the meanwhile, I sat my baby girl down and tried to convince her to participate.

“Sage, do you know how many times I have won a race?”

A little too quickly, she answered, “None.”

“Well that’s not entirely true,” I protested.  “There was that half marathon against the little kids a couple of months ago…”

I was sure she remembered that race where I went into Beast Mode and crushed the competition but that was not the point.  “Running isn’t about winning or losing,”  I lied,  “its’ about you against yourself.  Just try your best and no matter what happens we will still love you.  Of course we will love you more if you win…” I said in my best Toddlers and Tiaras voice.

So after my inspirational speech, Sage went on to the track as they called for the 5th/6th Grade girls 100 meter dash.  The gun went off and The Chariots of Fire theme played as she ran in her version of slow motion.  And came in last.

And then she had to go to see the trainer because she rolled her ankle and the day was done

So what is the moral of the story?

I guess the moral could be that our role as parents is to expose our children to as many different experiences as we can.  If they find something they enjoy, help to nurture that passion.   If running does not stick, that’s fine by me.  It would be cool to be able to go on runs with my baby girl some day but maybe Cross Country will be in her future and that could become a reality.  The alternative in high school is PE and that’s for the stoners.  Ooooo…I had not thought of that option….what if she is a stoner?  Hmmmm…

Anyways, she told me she is trying out for Belle in her summer theater production of Beauty and the Beast.  She’s braver than I am.

A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in or the kind of car I drove...but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child.

For anyone at work, you really don’t need sound for either one of these.  You know who you are.

I have seen this one before but I love the way we just look like ants.  It would be cool if we had a giant magnifying glass (kind of like Boston, huh?)

This one is just impressive

The King of Pain

April 6, 2012

I have stood here before inside the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running ’round my brain
I guess I’m always hoping that you’ll end this reign
But it’s my destiny to be the king of pain

The Police, 1983

I have always approached running somewhere between the worlds of serious and casual.  I run regularly but I do not log my runs.  I have a coach but I do not have a schedule.  I enter races but I do not care how well I do.  Ok, that last one was a lie.  This flippin’ quad has been bugging the stuff out of me.  I raced last week and while my time was fine, it was still thirty seconds slower than where I was last year at this time.  I wanted it to be better by now but the quad seems to not be listening to reason.  I decided that if the quad was not going to behave, then I would have to dish out some tough love, show the quad who was really boss.  Yup, it was time to re-visit the King of Pain…Rusty Snowplow

Rusty snow plow

Nahhh, just kidding.  Really I was going to let Rusty Snow inflict the hurt…

Rusty Snow (3) had to fight several challenges before winning in 2:25:42 at The Baystate Marathon in October, 1999

I have been to Rusty’s Chamber of Terror in the past but I have not had any injuries recently that a deep tissue massage would help.  I know that what is short-circuiting my leg is a nerve that is pinched.  I figured perhaps Rusty could reach under the quad and dig around a little bit and see if there were any knots that needed to be destroyed.

Rusty’s technique is simple.  Stick an elbow somewhere on your body, then put a foot on the wall for maximum leverage and then keep digging till the pain reaches white hot.  Well that might not be exactly how it is done but wow was I glad when the session was over.    In theory, some things got released, some body parts got loosened and hopefully there is a nerve that is somewhat less pinched.  But Motherfather did it hurt!  I am sure that is as much a reflection on my tightness as it is Rusty’s sharp elbows but I absolutely know now that I would tell everything I know if he was the interrogator.

Disclaimer:  Rusty could not be a more supportive coach.  I recognize that the pain inflicted was for my own benefit and the elbows may not have been as sharp as my mind hallucinated they were.  His stories during the whole operation helped to make the time go quickly.  But still….ouch.

So it has been a year already since my last marathon.  Well I wouldn’t say I have been missing them, Bob.  Do some people actually like running marathons?  I dunno…seems like an awful lot of hurt to go through for minimal glory.  We do know that nobody outside of the running world has any appreciation for what we do, right?  So with that in mind, I’ll give a shout out to all of the locals I could find that are running Boston next week.  I know injuries have stopped some of them from actually attending but we can still recognize the accomplishment:
